About The Piece

70 x 100 cm (approx. 39 × 27 inches) | Mixed media oil painting with gold leaf | 2026
Original painting by Brigita Bonas

I've never really understood why people insist that money doesn't grow on trees.

Have you looked around?

Trees grow from nothing but sunlight, water and time. They create abundance so effortlessly that they drop thousands of seeds they never intend to use. Grass grows. Forests grow. Coral reefs grow. Entire ecosystems grow. Nature seems remarkably unconcerned about scarcity.

So perhaps money doesn't grow on trees. Perhaps it grows wherever life is allowed to flourish.

This painting began with a simple thought: abundance is not something we manufacture. It's something we notice.

A twisted tree stretches across the canvas covered in fragments of gold leaf that catch the light as you move past it. Some people see blossoms. Some people see coins. Both interpretations work.

On windy days I sometimes hear trees rustling and imagine they're laughing at us.

Kaching. Kaching. Kaching.

The whole forest seems to understand something we've forgotten.

The sky doesn't worry about running out of blue. The sea doesn't worry about running out of water. The tree doesn't worry about whether it deserves to grow.

It simply does.

Money Grows on Trees is my own reminder that abundance might be far more natural than we've been taught to believe. Sometimes all it takes is looking up.
